The Concept:
Part of the ongoing Reshaping Collection, Vela is a study in reduction. The sail without the boat. The wind without the sea. Hand-built in The Studio from layered house-made pattern paper, this sculptural form takes the most elemental gesture of Mediterranean coastal life — the curve of a sail catching wind — and fixes it in recovered material on a hand-cast cement base.
The Form:
At 45cm tall and 26cm wide, Vela stands on a cement base shaped like a coastal stone — irregular, worn, specific to this coastline. The blue layered paper surface, worked with white mineral tones, references both the texture of canvas and the movement of water. It catches light the way a sail catches wind: differently from every angle, always in motion even when still.
